A Tupperware of Ashes

A Tupperware of Ashes - National Theatre

A Tupperware of Ashes

National Theatre until 16 November

The play is a powerful family drama by Tanika Gupta, exploring the devastating impact of dementia on a British-Indian matriarch, Queenie Mukherjee. As Queenie’s mind deteriorates, she grapples with her past, her deceased husband’s ghost, and her strained relationships with her children, who struggle to cope with her condition.

Through Queenie’s decline, the play touches on broader issues such as the immigrant experience, the isolation brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the challenges of navigating healthcare systems. Despite the heavy subject matter, moments of humor and cultural specificity bring levity and relatability, making the play deeply moving and resonant.

Chunky Move: 4/4

8 & 9 November - Southbank Centre

The UK premiere of this utterly distinct work from one of Australia’s leading companies pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance. As episode after episode builds upon the last, quartets and duets converge and diverge in ever more hypnotic configurations, in a performance that balances unity and individuality.

With backgrounds in krump, freestyle hip-hop, house and contemporary dance techniques, the diversity in the dancers’ artistic backgrounds, coupled with Hamilton’s striking craftsmanship, highlights a uniquely Australian performance.
