The Other Place

National Theatre until 9 November

The play reimagines Antigone within a contemporary family setting, exploring grief, guilt, and buried trauma. Annie returns home to stop her uncle Chris from scattering her father’s ashes, triggering the resurfacing of long-buried family secrets.

Zeldin's approach blends dark, psychological drama with moments of absurdity and horror. The strained family dynamics lead to shocking revelations, including incest and acts of violence, forcing the audience to confront the chaotic and destructive nature of grief. With its claustrophobic set and haunting performances, the play is a tense, unsettling exploration of how unresolved loss can tear families apart

The UK premiere of this utterly distinct work from one of Australia’s leading companies pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance. As episode after episode builds upon the last, quartets and duets converge and diverge in ever more hypnotic configurations, in a performance that balances unity and individuality.

With backgrounds in krump, freestyle hip-hop, house and contemporary dance techniques, the diversity in the dancers’ artistic backgrounds, coupled with Hamilton’s striking craftsmanship, highlights a uniquely Australian performance.
